Now you can send money to friends via Facebook Messenger

by Esteban Soto (@esoe03)

Facebook just added the payments feature to their messenger app and it is completely free. The service will make it a lot easier to send money to friends. If you were wondering why there is a separate app for Facebook and Messenger, this is one of the main reasons.

Messenger payments will be rolled out in the US over the coming weeks on iOS, Android and desktop. It is yet to see how much of a threat it will become to PayPal and other money transfer platforms. The company hasn’t announced when it will release the feature worldwide but we’ll be waiting impatiently.

To send money is very simple. Send a message to a friend, hit the $ icon on your screen, add the amount you want to send, select “pay” from the top right corner and add your debit card.

To receive money is even simpler. Open your friend’s conversation, select ‘Add Card’ and then add your debit card information.

You’ll only have to add your debit card information on the first time you send or receive money, after this you will have the card added on your account to make it even easier for future transfers.

The system uses pin code to prevent fraud and in case your device has touchID features you can use it to approve payments too.

“We use secure systems that encrypt the connection between you and Facebook as well as your card information when you ask us to store it for you.” said Facebook on their press release. “These payment systems are kept in a secured environment that is separate from other parts of the Facebook network and that receive additional monitoring and control.”
